The rural community Käina ( Käina vald ) is located in the southeast of the Estonian county Hiiu.

Description

Käina is one of four rural communities, the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa. The rural municipality covers an area of ​​188.5 km ². 126 km ² of forest areas. The municipal area also includes the island of Kassari and numerous smaller islands and islets in the Baltic Sea.

The rural municipality has 1,835 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). A large demographic challenge migration and aging of the population;

The main settlements are the capital Käina ( Käina alevik ) and the localities Männamaa, Putkaste and Kassari. In the municipality of capital are the seat of administration, a high school and the local cultural center. History

The parish Käina was founded after 1254. The territory comprised the present-day rural community as well as parts of neighboring rural community Emmaste. It was under the Bishop of Saare - Lääne ( German Osel - Wiek ). The center was located on the Bischofsgut of Alliksaare (now part of the village Sinima ). 1627 the parish Reigi and 1866 the parish Emmaste were separated.

In addition to the main town Käina for rural community includes the villages Aadma, Allika, Esiküla, Jõeküla, Kaasiku, Kaigutsi, Kassari, Kleemu, Kogri, Kolga, Kuriste, Laheküla, Lelu, Ligema, Luguse, Moka, Mäeküla, Mäeltse, Männamaa, Nasva, Niidiküla Nõmme, Nõmmerga, Orjaku, Putkaste, Pärnselja, Ristivälja, Selja, Taguküla, Taterma, Ühtri, Utu, Vaemla and Villemi.

Attractions

The Bay of Käina opened an impressive panorama of the Baltic Sea and the island of Kassari. The area attracts many nature lovers and ornithologists.

Landmark of the municipality are the remains of a stone church from the 15-16. Century in the main town Käina. The church was badly damaged in 1941 during the Second World War. On Kassari a historic chapel has been preserved in the village Esiküla.

Worth seeing is the museum in the birthplace of the Estonian composer Rudolf Tobias. It is located in the village of Selja. Tobias was born in 1873 in Käina and died in 1918 in Berlin.

Since 2005, every year in July, the Folk Music Festival Käina instead. It brings together Estonian and international bands and attracts numerous visitors.
