KAIRA

Kaira ( Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array) is a scientific measurement instrument of the Geophysical Observatory Sodankylä (University of Oulu). This broadband radio receiver is used for the study of the atmosphere and near-Earth space, as well as to astronomical research.

Kaira is based on the LOFAR antennas and signal processing technology and can be used both independently as a passive receiver as a receiver for the in Tromsø, Norway, located EISCAT VHF radar. Although Kaira was built to develop technologies for the modular EISCAT_3D radar system, but Kaira also allows a variety of innovative research and technological development. Kaira was funded by the University of Oulu, the European Regional Development Fund and the municipality of Sodankylä. The total cost amounted to 1.263 million euros.

Kaira has been in operation since 2012.
