Kaiser Marshall

Joseph ( emperor ) Marshall ( born June 11, 1899 in Savannah, Georgia, † January 3, 1948 in New York City ) was an influential American jazz drummer.

In Boston, where he had grown up, Marshall had his first appearances, including Jules Bledsoe and Charlie Dixon. In New York, he first played in 1923 in the band of Ralph " Shrimp " Jones before he earned his reputation as a leading jazz drummer in the years 1922 to 1929 in Fletcher Henderson's orchestra. In 1929 he played with McKinney 's Cotton Pickers.

Even after his departure from Henderson remained active as a drummer Marshall and bandleader. His bands include, inter alia, the " Czar of Harmony " and the " Kaiser & Reynolds ' Bostonians ". He played in the orchestras of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. Among the musicians with whom he worked, including LeRoy Smith, Leon Englund, Bobby Martin ( European tour 1937), Edgar Hayes, Wild Bill Davison, Art Hodes, Bunk Johnson ( 1946), Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow.

Joseph "Kaiser" Marshall died in 1948 from the effects of food poisoning.

He was one of the first jazz drummer who used hi-hats.
