Kakanui Range

The Kakanui Mountains dominate the eastern horizon of Maniototo

The Kakanui Mountains or Kakanui Range is a mountain range in the hinterland of Oamaru on the South Island of New Zealand. They belong administratively to the Waitaki District, which belongs to the region in the west and in the east to Canterbury Otago region here.

It forms the border between the valley of the Waitaki River in the north and the Maniototo Plain, an area in the southwest. The highest point is Mount Pisgah with 1,643 m.

The mountains are crossed by a settlement on the Dansey Pass leading road whose highest point is 935 m.

The south-western slopes of the Kakanui Range were an important gold field during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s. Remnants of the gold rush can still be found at Kyeburn and Naseby.
