Kakhetian (pig)

The Kachetische pig ( Georgian: კახური, Kachuri ) is a country pig breed from Georgia.

Breeding history

The Kachetische pig shows characteristics of a primitive race, which correspond to the wild boar, as the position of the lower molars, the long, thin legs and tears the longitudinal stripe pattern of the piglets.

The kakhetian pigs are kept as a gene reserve, which can be repeatedly crossed into the performance breeds.

Occurrence

Previously, the kakhetian pigs were distributed throughout Georgia. Today they are still in the districts Akhmeta, Telavi, Kvareli, Gurjaani and Dusheti in Kakheti. In 1980 there were only 745 purebred animals.
