Kalervo Toivonen

Kaarlo Kalervo Toivonen ( born January 22, 1913 in Salo, † July 25, 2006 in Turku ) was a Finnish javelin thrower, who was successful in the mid- 1930s.

He had his only international appearance. During the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, where he won with 70.72 m bronze Both Toivonen and his compatriot Yrjö Nikkanen ( silver with 70.77 meters) and the German surprise winner Gerhard Stöck ( gold with 71.74 m) benefited from the fact, the world record holder and favorite Matti Järvinen did not have his best day and under 70 m mark remained.

In the following years, 1937 and 1938 achieved Toivonen season - bests of 71.05 and 71.10 m. At the European Championships in Paris in 1938, however, he did not participate. His best jump of 71.39 meters he threw in 1939. In Finnish national championships he won from 1936 to 1938 and 1943 respectively to the third place in the javelin. In the pentathlon, he was second in 1936.

The trained physical education teacher was at the 1948 Olympic Games to the Belgian coaching staff and supervised, among others Gaston Reiff and Etienne Gailly.
