Källunge church

The Church of Källunge (Swedish Källunge kyrka ) is a Romance country church on the Swedish Baltic Sea island of Gotland. It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Gothem in the diocese of Visby.

The church is one of the oldest stone churches on Gotland. It has the bizarre silhouette of a so-called saddle Church. To the west is a small Romanesque nave of the 12th century, with a matching tower from the same period. To the east stands on a mighty Gothic choir, which dates from the first half of the 14th century. We had the intention of gradually demolish the rest of the church and to complete the new building with a large west tower. The plan has been implemented but not further after the completion of the choir. The church is distinguished by an unusual size for rural churches. The interior is made of a three-aisled hall with two round and two octagonal pillars. The magnificent south portal shows the tympanum representations of Christ with two female saints and the gable Mary with the baby Jesus.

On the portal you will also find one of the oldest images of a nyckelharpa probably be dated to about 1350. The instrument shown is similar to an early form of the nyckelharpa, which is known as " Mora - harpa " today.

The tower

The tower with the simple, narrow portal was redesigned later. The arch to the nave was extended through a pointed arch, a new bell storey was set up, and the helmet was a steeper shape.

The nave

The nave serves as a vestibule of the choir, which forms the actual church today. Its south porch dates from the 14th century and has been created by Neoikonicus, considerable Kapitellreliefs that portray aspects of medieval life. The east wall of the nave with the Arc de Triomphe is largely original. In the northeast corner is a pre-Reformation altar Marie. In 1951, when the church was restored by the architect Erik Lazy, you have discovered the basis of a well worn, contemporary with the nave Apsidenchores.

The frescoes

The Romanesque church has fragments of Russian- Byzantine fresco painting of the 12th century.

  • Links from Arc de Triomphe sees two of the ways on the way to Bethlehem, about the way to Golgotha .
  • Right of the arch is shown the dragon fight of St. Georg.
  • , Is in the arch opening surrounded by saints, a medallion to recognize Christ.
  • On the side of the choir is the decoration of the sheet of ornamental painting.
  • On the west wall were fragments of Judgment obtained.

The Romanesque frescoes are among the finest examples of early murals on Gotland.

Also, the Gothic church member has remains of wall paintings; these are the so-called Passion Champion, an unnamed artist of the 15th century attributed.

Inventory

The most famous equipment article is the altarpiece, a North German work from the early 16th century. He was acquired in 1684 by the Cathedral in Visby and came to Källunge later.

Left of the altar on the north wall you can see a monumental sacrament cabinet with worn by columns framing. Next to the cabinet is a copy of the ship's flag ( the original is in Gotland Fornsal ). The font whose ornaments are largely disappeared, is a work of anonymous master Byzantios from the 12th century. In the floor of the choir to grave stones are from the 14th to the 17th centuries. The pulpit was created in 1707 by the Visby carpenter Christian Fedder and painted in 1726 by Johan Hernell.

The sacristy

The sacristy dates from the same time as the Gothic church part. With its vaulted ceiling and the narrow windows, it gives an impression of how a secular space in the stone-built parish houses and farms of the island looked like in the Middle Ages.
