Kamaran

Kamaran (Arabic كمران Kamaran ) is the largest island located in the Red Sea of Yemen.

Geography

Kamaran Island is a shelf on the shallow continental shelf of the Arabian Peninsula, and surrounded on three sides by coral reefs. The southern end of the island, Ra's al - Yaman, is just two kilometers from the Yemeni mainland at Ras al- Bayad on Salif Peninsula and separated from it by the Kamaran Passage. The island is mostly flat, with some hills in the south. The highest point is Jabal Yaman, with a height of 24 meters.

The population is around 2,200. Capital is Kamaran on the east coast, the Yemeni mainland opposite, and blessed with a natural harbor. Other communities are Makram on the west coast and Yaman in the extreme south.

History

Kamaran had been inhabited for centuries when the Portuguese established a base on the island in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the island was part of the Ottoman Empire, and served as a quarantine station for pilgrims to Mecca.

In June 1915, during the First World War, the British captured the island with troops from Aden, and from then appointed commissioners for the administration of the island without having to take formal possession of it. In 1923, the Treaty of Lausanne, which marked the end of the Ottoman Empire, open the island's future. Great Britain held the island despite protests of the Kingdom of Yemen continues to occupy, and managed them from the colony Aden. In 1949, Great Britain formally determined that the Governor of Aden and the governor of Kamaran is, but the island was not affiliated with the colony.

On November 30, 1967 Kamaran was celebrating the independence of the former colony of Aden, the People's Republic of Yemen ( South Yemen ) added to this, but was occupied in 1972 by the lying geographically closer Yemen Arab Republic.
