Kambochora (Greek Καμπόχωρα ) from 1989 to 2010, a community of Chios Prefecture on the Greek island of Chios. With 950 inhabitants ( as of 2001) was Chalkios seat of local government.

Location

The municipality is located in the southern part of the island and is the only district without direct access to the sea. The territory of the municipality of Agios Minas rises slowly in the southeast to the northwest. In the east Korakaris ( Κορακάρης ) of the mountain forms the border with the town of Chios. A hill country forms the transition to the municipal districts of Ionia in the south and Mastichochoria in the southwest. At the southern end of the Provatas ( Προβατάς ) in the northwest (707 m, Kakia Rachi; Κακιά Ράχη ) and in the north Omiroupoli borders.

Administrative divisions

The merger of the previously independent rural communities Chalkios, Vavili, Vasileoniko, Ververato, Dafnonas and Zyfias was established in 1989, the community Kambochora. With the administrative reform in 2010 on 1 January 2011 the municipalities of the Island were merged to the municipality Chios. Kambochora since then has been one of eight municipal districts. The former seven municipal districts form a municipality and six local communities. The population figures are from the census of 2011.

Chalkios

With 950 inhabitants Chalkios ( Χαλκειός (n. sg. ) ) Is the largest town in the municipality and administrative headquarters. Chalkios lies in the plain south of the mountain Korakaris ( Κορακάρης ) and 6 km southwest of Chios. At the entrance of the Folk Art Museum Chalkios the community is housed in a former olive mill.

Vasileoniko

The village Vasileoniko ( Βασιλεώνοικο (n. sg. ) ) Is about 1 km east of Chalkios. The place name means home of the king, because in ancient times in the area lived a king.

Vavili

Vavili also Vavyli ( Βαβίλοι ( m. pl. ) Or Βαβύλοι ) is located in the south of the municipality about 2 km south Chalkios in the immediate vicinity of the road connecting the Chios Mesta. In the small Byzantine museum of the town, in addition to religious objects and images of the church of Panagia Krina, which is about 2.5 km west issued. In Vavili mastic is produced.

The Byzantine church of Panagia Krina ( Παναγία Κρήνα ) is located a few kilometers east of the village. In the early 13th century, the church, reminiscent in their construction of a miniature of the main church of the monastery of Nea Moni was built with community room and hallway ( esonarthex ). The interior has been generously fitted with wall paintings. Up to five superimposed layers paintings were found. In the 18th century, another hallway ( Exonarthex ) was grown outside the church. The earthquake in 1881, large parts of the church were destroyed. Since the early 1980s, the frescoes are being restored. Results of this work are the frescoes of the 14th century, are exhibited in the Giustiniani palace in the fortress of Chios. Younger wall paintings from 1734 are on display at the Byzantine Museum of Chios.

Agios Georgios Sykousis

The village of Agios Georgios Sykousis ( Άγιος Γεώργιος Συκούσης ( m. sg. ) ) Lies at about 360 meters above sea level, making it the highest town in the municipality. To the east the land drops to the plane of Kambos out. Therefore, the view over the municipality extends to the coast of Asia Minor and to the island of Samos in the southeast. The village is situated on the road from the town of Chios, 11 km away to the southwest of the island.

Zyfias

The village Zyfias ( Ζυφιάς ( m. sg. ) ) Is 2 km west of Chalkios and with an area of 1.90 km ² at the same time even the smallest village ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Ζυφιά ).

Ververato

The place Ververato ( Βερβεράτο (n. sg. ) ) Is 1 km west of Chalkios.

Dafnonas

The village Dafnonas located in the north of the municipality at the foot of the mountain " Kakia scale " ( " poor step " Κακιά Σκάλα ) a southeastern arm of the " Provatas " ( Προβατάς ) in about 200 m altitude, 2 km north- west of Chalkios. To the east lies the mountain " Korakaris " ( Κορακάρης ), behind it in about 10 km from the town of Chios. The elevated position, the view extends to the east and southeast over a large part of its territory and over the sea to the coast of Asia Minor. The place name is derived from the former in the area numerous occurring laurel ( Daphnes, Δάφνες ). The original settlement was Dafnonas Kanavoutsata near the ancient Petrana. At the beginning of the 11th century, the town was built on its present location. The medieval ruins of Kanavoutsato, Stratigato and Vestarchato are in the vicinity of the village and were formerly inhabited by Genoese.

Economy

For incomes of the population mainly contribute the income from the cultivation of citrus fruits (mainly lemons) and almonds, olives for oil production and horticulture largely cultivated for its own purposes. Vavili one of the mastixproduzierenden places.
