Kanak people
Wogs are Melanesian natives in New Caledonia ( Southwest Pacific ). They make up 45 % of the inhabitants of New Caledonia. The word comes from kanaka maoli, a Hawaiian term for 'man' ( kanaka ), which was often used in the past by European explorers, traders and missionaries in Oceania for all non-European islanders. Prior to European discovery, there was no united state in New Caledonia and, accordingly, no comprehensive self-designation for the inhabitants. Many Kanaker maintain in their tribes continue to speak their own languages and customs. Today, about 25 of these Kanak languages in the various tribal areas are still used.
Even in France ( the former colonial power of these areas ), the number of immigrants from there called Kanak or canaque or be so designated.
