Kannauj (Hindi: कन्नौज, Kannauj ) is an ancient city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with 71 530 inhabitants ( 2001 census ). It is the administrative center of a district of the same name. The city is situated on the Ganges. In earlier times it was the capital large Hindu kingdoms, such as from Harshavardhana and the Pratihara. With the destruction by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1018 began its decline.
