Kanotix

Kanotix is a Debian-based Linux distribution with integrated live system using the Knoppix technology. Kanotix was explicitly adapted for modern hardware and designed for hard disk installations. As a graphical interface K Desktop Environment 3 or from " kanotix 2011 Hellfire" KDE Software Compilation 4 is used by default.

The name " kanotix " is derived from the nickname ( Kano ) Developer Jörg Schirottke.

History

The distribution kanotix went from Kano 's Script Page for Knoppix in December 2003 with the Xmas Preview as an independent, on the unstable branch of Debian Sid based Knoppix derivative forth.

In 2004, 10 kanotix versions were released with the name Bughunter 1-X, published in 2005 4 stable releases, which were identified only by year of publication and serial number. Current events reported in 2006 some versions of the name " CeBit " - and " Easter " edition. The last is based on Debian Unstable version appeared on October 2, 2006: kanotix -2006- 01- RC4.

After dissatisfaction with the stability of the distribution based on Debian GNU / Linux in 2007, 4.0 ( " etch " ) converted as a base, which was the new stable branch of Debian on April 8, 2007 to February 14, 2009. A part of the community stayed with Debian Sid, resulting sidux was formed. During the transition, in the first half of 2007 kanotix existing installations could also be updated via apt -get dist -upgrade, provided that the source had been changed from Sid to etch before running Debian Etch release on April 8, 2007. The new base brought the intended benefits: Thus, now largely free of risk conducted updates ( dist -upgrades ) and any additional packages to be installed.

To continue to be able to run on modern hardware, and in particular portable computers such as laptops or netbooks, a current kernel is used ( from Ubuntu sources ), which is for Debian "stable" adapted and modified. In addition, the own packages and scripts are constantly kept up to date.

Scope

In kanotix is a Linux live system with installation feature, which can be started from bootable media such as CD, DVD, or with the newer hybrid isos also bootable USB media like pen drive; a hard drive or an installation is not required to test and possibly to work. The included wireless drivers provide access to the Internet without a cable connection. On media such as hard drives, USB sticks, floppy disks can be accessed in live mode, files on NTFS partitions can be read and written standard from Thor's Hammer - RC7 (NTFS -3g ). The newer versions have kanotix - as comparable distributions also - ext4 as the default file system during installation. Reiserfs, xfs, jfs are optional. With Kanotix Excalibur could be chosen from kernel version 2.6.28 ext4, it has Kanotix Hellfire the default.

Kanotix has a working hardware detection, even for newer hardware. It includes free and open source applications, the GIMP, the browser Firefox, Iceweasel, and numerous KDE applications. As an office application, the latest version of OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice is included instead of the older versions of Debian stable. Similarly, wine and the multi messenger Pidgin, of IRC client conversation and the VoIP Skype software in the current version in the repository kanotix vorgehalten.Darin are also included applications that are missing on the Kanotix.iso reasons of space. In the new, introduced by kanotix - Dragonfire LXDE version was on LibreOffice, wine and icedove omitted.

Until kanotix - Thor Hammer was - as in Knoppix - the klik client included. This is mainly meant, "live" to install programs in operation and test.

Live mode

Kanotix can be used in live mode without a hard drive installation for testing, but also to work. By unionfs or aufs- support personal settings, in addition " installed " programs can be tested. Also, the storage of data and the kanotix configuration on the hard disk or portable storage device such as a USB stick is possible. ( Creating a bootable USB stick with "persistent" option). The kanotix image can be the hard disk or a USB flash drive, if supported by the BIOS, to boot. This results in a considerable speed advantage and makes a ( almost) normal work like a hard disk installation possible.

HDD installation

Kanotix can be installed using the supplied graphical installer to your hard drive. The new version of the acritoxinstallers offers a considerably wider range of functions. This has been constantly adapted to new versions or new hardware. For the preparation of an installation, in addition to the manual partitioning with gparted the programs quite a few " automatic " settings are selected.

The installation process is completed within approximately 10 to 20 minutes when going from a mobile data carrier (CD or DVD and USB Stick) installed, when using a Kanotix.iso on the hard disk installation is faster. The so installed kanotix behaves like a regular Debian installation and can also be maintained through updates from the Debian pool and kanotix repository.

Kanotix - Thor Hammer 2007

Kanotix - Thor Hammer 2007 was the first version which was based on Debian stable and was released after a number of internal test versions on 15 September 2007 as Release Candidate 6. An updated version was released on 1 January 2008 as Release Candidate 7. ( Another or " Final" version did not appear. )

All newer versions kanotix have a recent kernel from Ubuntu sources. Some kernel corrections (so-called kernel patches ) flowed the other way around also in the Ubuntu version 8:04 ( Hardy Heron).

The development in 2008 was concentrated in the kernel development on the updating and maintenance of " Thor's Hammer" repositories, and the testing of additional packages and functions. This includes adjustments for netbooks or subnotebooks. Among the most important backports and updates OpenOffice.org 3.x. belonged in the current version. According to the developer, Upgrade incl kernel update is always recommended, as well as critical security updates are included. After the release of kernel version 2.6.28 was available as " generic" and "server", but also updates the kernel versions from 2.6.22 were still available. The kernel versions 6.2.24 to 6.2.32 are included in " Thor's Hammer" repository. Since the release of kanotix Excalibur 2010 (see below), there were no more updates.

Kanotix Excalibur 2010

The version Kanotix Excalibur is based on Debian 5.0 ( "Lenny" ) and learned over the previous version, some fundamental changes. Instead Knoppix Debian Live was used as a base and the new bootloader GRUB2 used. The Kanotix Excalibur.iso appeared in 7 variants: Unlike Kanotix Thorhammer there was next to the 32-bit again 64- bit version, and a 2in1 ISO with both versions. Furthermore, there were also the three versions with a KDE Plasma Desktop 4.3 and an all-in -one ISO with all versions.

Kanotix also put in "Excalibur" functionality, so that it could already be used productively in the basic equipment. Therefore, when the official release Kanotix Excalibur.iso no longer appeared as a CD version, but with considerably more than 700 MB Designed for the launch of USB flash drive ( recommended) or DVD.

Kanotix-Hellfire-2011/2012

Developed under the code name " Hellfire" kanotix version based on Debian 6 (" Squeeze" ). Kanotix Hellfire brought the KDE Software Compilation 4 version 4.4.5 in a 32- bit and 64- bit version of Debian Squeeze, and a new artwork. As with kanotix usual, the packages included in the current Debian "stable " branch by a number for the release time of cutting-edge packages have been added, inter alia, the kernel ( Ubuntu - recompiled ), LibreOffice and Kano's current scripts. The first version Kanotix Hellfire 2011-03 was published on March 2, 2011, the second Kanotix Hellfire 2011-05 11 May 2011 at LinuxTag 2011.

As with previous versions, updates from our own repository ( wine kernel, LibreOffice, iceweasel, pidgin, and others) were also at Kanotix Hellfire after the release continuously available. With the "Hellfire " version of the first " GFX overlays " were introduced, which allow use of the binary 3D graphics driver from Nvidia or ATI already in the live mode.

Kanotix-Dragonfire-2012/2013

In addition to an updated version of " Kanotix Hellfire" which is based on Debian 7 " Wheezy " version kanotix -2012- Dragonfire was presented at the LinuxTag 2012. All versions were available for both 32 -bit and 64 -bit, 32- bit versions also as so-called "mini" versions < 1 GB, where large-scale applications such as LibreOffice, Wine were removed and others. A recent and special version was offered during CeBIT 2013. The new stable version of kanotix - Dragonfire was presented for the LinuxTag 2013. In addition to the traditional in kanotix KDE desktop also a slimmer version has LXDE under the kanotix images. In addition, is also - like the special " CeBIT -2013 Version " - a "KDE Special" offered, among other things, a Steam client as well as pre-installed 3D drivers for NVIDIA and AMD contains.

Current development and test versions

The developer of the official kanotix -installer " Acritox " are on his website an insight on the state of development and also offers current, but unofficial kanotix test versions, so-called " kanotix - Acritox trial shots" for download and testing. A " kanotix - Acritox trial shot" from February 14, 2013 offered in addition to the standard KDE desktop for the first time a version with LXDE for 32 and 64 bit on. The latest versions of the "trial shots" are dated 28/08/2013. Since 25/11/2013 are also so-called nightly builds - automatically generated, daily kanotix images - available in different versions for download.

Derivatives

The distribution Parsix is a derivative of kanotix that is aligned unlike kanotix on the GNOME desktop environment.
