History

The history of the Canton of Zurich School began with the Education Act of the Canton of Zurich on 28 September 1832. Reflecting its liberal regeneration time of the Canton of Zurich was awarded for the first time in its history, an organically structured education from elementary school to university. This means that the district school was launched, which should provide access to higher technical or academic education, founded mainly on the University of Zurich at the same time. The district school, formally established on 22 April 1833 resulted in two departments, the gymnasium and the industrial school. The district school moved in 1842 to the Raemistrasse 59 in a magnificent new building of Gustav Albert Wegmann their first home. According to the Education Act of 1859, the Industrial School should focus primarily on students, " which devote themselves technical or commercial professions ." Beginning in 1842, therefore, a special was within the industrial school " mercantilist ", ie commercial branch, which was eventually become independent to the school year 1904/ 05 « Cantonal Business School Zurich " than as a separate department within the district school. From the body of the Industrial School was founded in 1928, the secondary school, today's Mathematics and Natural Sciences High School.

Like a red thread through the history of the canton of Zurich School of the problem of lack of space and the associated construction and financial issues. Soon the buildings of the district school was too small to Ramistrasse 59 and Canton had to rent a room in surrounding buildings. In 1909 a new building at 76 Raemistrasse a provisional relief. The house had to the district school but share with the Chemical Institute of the University. Back in the early 1930s urged in view of the new space requirements for the gymnastics and physical education an extension, which was approved in 1939 by the people. The two old gyms on Heimplatz could no longer meet the relevant needs of the zeitgeist. 1942 four gyms and a sports field were put into operation between the Rämi, Gloria and Freie Strasse.

Until 1904-1947 the Canton Zurich School consisted of four departments: the school, the secondary school, trade school and the district school Winterthur. The gymnasium was the largest department with just under 1000 students, followed by the trade school with a little over 500, the district school Winterthur by far with a little over 400 and the secondary school with just under 400 students. The district school was purely a boys' school, only exceptionally about 1920 three girls were taken. Zurich's been to 1976 at the Higher daughters urban schools in Zurich and Winterthur taught ( Stadelhofen, Wiedikon, Hottingen, Ries Bach, Hohe Promenade and Rychenberg ). Given the increasing student and teacher numbers urged after the Second World War on a reorganization. Therefore, the Government decided on 4 July 1946 the high school as the largest department divided into two schools:

  • The Literargymnasium that offered the baccalaureate type A with Latin and Greek, in the school building Schanzenberg.
  • The Grammar School, which offered the Matura type B with Latin and modern languages , in the old district school building at 59th Raemistrasse

The Progymnasium both schools was conducted according to the same curriculum, so that a school crossing to the second class was possible. While the Literargymnasium thus received back manageable for that time size after the formal separation on 16 October 1947, the grammar school was still rather too large, so that even a further subdivision was promised in 1959 with the separation of the Gymnasium Freudenberg was reached.

Further, the question of space remained a pressing problem. 1946, the building Schanzenberg was established for the district school, 1955 and 1956/57, were erected barracks complex of Villa Zurich mountain road 6, which itself was rebuilt in 1965 for the use of the district school. Finally, the school gave way even in the house, " Belmont " from which was used for biology classes. In addition, the Government went to the long-demanded decentralization of high school sites in order to resolve the regional inequality in educational opportunities. So got the Zürcher Oberland in Wetzikon 1952 as the first regional district school. 1959 the Cantonal based trade school and a part of the secondary school in the schoolhouse Freudenberg new quarters. Those departments of the district school, which remained in Rämiquartier, led by decision of the Governing Council first to 1976, the term " Zurich mountain " in the name, while the split-off part of the secondary school and the Cantonal Commercial School, who moved to the newly built school building Freudenberg -Enge, new as 5 Department of the Canton of Zurich School of the designation " district school Freudenberg, secondary school or trade school " led.

Furthermore remained unsatisfactory, the Raumsitation after 1959 for the secondary school, which offered scattered across four buildings their classes. Here is the opening of a new site in Oerlikon should provide remedy. 1965 gave the electorate the Cantonal the competence to establish new Canton schools, although the grant of loans for the construction of new school buildings remained bound to referendums, which were not always positive. 1965 the people voted to about the construction of a new school building for the schools at Zurich mountain. The third new urban schoolhouse in Oerlikon but failed in 1967 to the people and was not realized until later.

More " Country secondary schools " were in the discussion for the Zurich lowlands ( Bülach ), the Limmat Valley ( Oberurdorf or Dietikon ), the left and right banks of Lake Zurich before (miles and Horgen ), the Glatt Valley ( Dübendorf or type ) and the Knonauer Office ( Affoltern am Albis ). Within the city, Oerlikon and Enge ( Schoolhouse Freudenberg), should also have a place also in Rämibühl new school buildings were planned for the location Zurich mountain. Four projects have been brought forward and ordered in a priority list: Oerlikon, Bülach, Oberurdorf and the second Canton Büelrain for Winterthur. The other projects were deferred. Only the Glattal seems likely yet to come up with the Cantonal School in Uster 2012 at a middle school site.

Another important step for the expansion and renovation of secondary schools in the Canton of Zurich was the takeover of the Higher Girls' School of Zurich and Winterthur in the canton school in 1976 and the associated introduction of coeducation. Thus, the number of sites of the district school for another five increased within the city of Zurich ( Hohe Promenade, Hottingen, Stadelhofen, Ries Bach, Wiedikon ) and one in Winterthur ( Rychenberg ). In 1983, the Canton of Zurich School was dissolved as an administrative unit and the individual becomes independent schools administratively.
