Kaoru Maruyama

Maruyama Kaoru (Japanese丸山 薫; * June 8, 1899, † 21 October 1974) was a Japanese writer.

Life

The son of a senior official changed due to his father's profession in his childhood often the place of residence. A harbor cruise in Yokohama in 1911 aroused his enthusiasm for the lake, which became a central theme of his later works. He started in the hope of a professional career as a ship captain in 1918 training at the Seehandelsakademie, however, was not up to the physical requirements.

He studied French literature from 1921 in Kyoto and studied from 1926 at the University of Tokyo. Under the influence of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde and Hagiwara Sakutaro he had already decided at that time for a writing career. In 1932 he published his first book of poems Ho - Rampu - Kanome. As a writer for the magazine Shiki he was first introduced to the literary circles of Tokyo in contact.

Two other Gechtbände published 1935. For the second, Yonen, he received the Bungei - Hanron Poetry Prize. In 1941 he received the invitation to participate as a correspondent on a training cruise for midshipmen to China. The experiences of this journey, he reflected in the poetry collection Tenshō naru Tokoro.

The war Japan's entry interrupted Maruyamas literary career. From 1945 to 1948 he lived in northern Japan. Then he settled in Toyohashi, the hometown of his wife Miyoko Takai (高井 三四 子), where he worked as a lecturer in modern Japanese literature, and published his last major volumes of poetry.
