Kapan

Kapan ( Կապան Armenian, Russian Капан ) is the capital of the Armenian province of Syunik and is located in the southeast of the country. In Soviet times the city was called Ghapan or Kafan (Armenian Ղափան or Կաֆան ).

Kapan is located in the southeast of the country on the border with Azerbaijan or to Nagorno-Karabakh at an altitude of 800 m above sea level and has approximately 30,000 inhabitants and is the eighth-largest city in Armenia. Even today, the town is a mining site. She suffers from the consequences of the collapse of the economy after the independence of Armenia from the Soviet Union and the war over Nagorno -Karabakh from 1992 to 1994. Since 1994 there is a truce, but the borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are still closed.
