Kapchagay Reservoir

The Kapchagai Reservoir ( English: Capchagay reservoir ) is located north of Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, at the place Qapschaghai (Russian Капчагай ) on the river Ili near the border with Kyrgyzstan.

The reservoir with approximate dimensions 110 times 30 km has a water surface of 1847 km ² and a storage space of 28,100 million cubic meters. It serves the water supply from Almaty and after Buchtarma Reservoir one of the largest reservoirs of Kazakhstan. In a hydroelectric power plant electricity is generated.

The dam has two Absperrbauwerke, two dams, one with 470 m and 370 m length. The crown length, however, indicated elsewhere with 1900 m. The maximum height is 56 m, but alternatively also 35, called 41 and 52 m. Other characteristics of the two structures are:

In 1965 started the construction of the hydroelectric plant. On September 29, 1969, the Ili was first off and in May 1970, began with the filling of the reservoir. The first turbine began its work on 22 December 1970, the fourth on 22 December 1971. Recent construction work was completed in 1980. The four turbines and generators supply a power of 4 * 91 = 364 MW. ( Elsewhere by 4 * 108.5 = 434 MW spoken. )
