Kaposvár

Kaposvar [ kɒpoʃva ː r] ( German Kopisch, Ruppert Mountain, Ruppertsburg ) is the capital of Somogy county in Hungary. The city lies on the River Kapos and is located 186 km from Budapest.

History

According to one legend the settlement as Rome was founded on seven hills. The area has been inhabited since around 5000 BC to 400 BC, the area of the Celtic tribes was repossessed.

Mid 14th century, was mentioned for the first time the city as Kapos in the deed of foundation of the episcopal ministry in Pécs in 1009. Built the family Rupoly the castle of Kapos, who became known as Neuburg.

1555 the Ottomans conquered in a five-day siege of the fortress and the Benedictine monastery. 1686 the settlement was freed from Ottoman rule. The municipality received market rights in 1703 and 1749, the city is the seat of Somogy county.

In the 19th century the city continued to develop strongly through the important railway line between Budapest and Zagreb and has been an important industrial center. Until the First World War Kaposvar was a garrison town of the Imperial Austria -Hungarian army. 1914 here was the III. Battalion of the Hungarian Infantry Regiment No. 44

Kaposszentjakab, a neighboring community was in 1950 connected to the city. 1973 followed Toponár, Kaposfüred and Töröcske.

In 1990, the city was one of 23 cities of county rank. Since 1993, the city is a bishop's seat. The University of Kaposvar was founded in 2000.

From 7 to 12 August 2007, the Vaulting Championship was held in Kaposvar.
