Karditsa (Greek Καρδίτσα ( f sg ) ) is a city and municipality (Greek Dimos Δήμος ) in the south-western Thessaly in Greece.

Geography

Karditsa is the seat of the regional district of the same. The city is located on a traffic junction in the plain of Thessaly between the 60 km from Larisa in the Northeast, the 94 km distant Lamia in the south, the Volos, 100 km away to the east and 29 km away Trikala in the northwest. Karditsa is also connected to the railway network ( branch line of the Athens- Thessaloniki to Kalambaka ). West and south of the city of the Thessaly plain in a hilly countryside and the foothills of the southern Pindos goes on, the municipality Karditsa extends south about 20 kilometers into the mountains and borders on the region of Central Greece.

History

The establishment of the fortified settlement falls under the period of Turkish rule. The settlement was built to defend against attacks of the inhabitants of Agrafa Mountains. Soon also took advantage of the Greek merchants marketplace. The name probably derives from the Slavic name Graditsa from, which means as much as or small town (fortified ) town. 1821 called for a plague numerous victims. 1881 came with Karditsa Thessaly to Greece. The following year, the municipality became a town.

Karditsa 1941 was occupied by the German Wehrmacht. Already on March 12, 1943 were able to take the old Greek partisans. Karditsa was therefore one of the first liberated cities in Southeast Europe. Today the city is the administrative, cultural and economic center of the prefecture. We see that there is also a branch of the University of Thessaly.

Management

Karditsa divided since 2011 into five municipal districts, which formed from 1997 to 2010 independent communities. The municipal districts in turn are subdivided into villages, which correspond to the areas of the municipalities until 1997, and elect their own local representatives. The population figures are derived from the results of the 2001 census.
