Karl August Senff

Karl August Senff ( born March 24, 1770 in Kreypau, today Saxony -Anhalt; † 2 Januarjul / January 14 1838greg in Tartu, Estonia today. . ) Was a painter, graphic artist and engraver.

Life

Karl August Senff was born near Merseburg, the son of Protestant theologian Karl Friedrich mustard ( 1739-1814 ). He was supposed to study medicine. However Senff went for art studies from 1788 to 1793 initially to Leipzig at Adam Friedrich Oeser. From 1795 he studied with Christian Leberecht Vogel, who was a professor at the Art Academy in Dresden. Until 1802 Senff lived as a private student and freelance artist.

From 1803 Senff as head of the School of Drawing and Kupferstechner at the reopened University in Livonia Tartu ( Dorpat ) worked. In 1818 he received the title of associate professor.

Work

The artistic focus of Karl August Senff lay on etchings, pastel painting and graphic art. For study purposes Senff has written seven books with Example 69 engravings and Aquatintablättern. Also his textbook Geometric theory of signs from 1828, which includes fifty illustrations became known. Senff created numerous portraits and landscape views.
