Karl Ernst Theodor Schweigger

Karl Ernst Theodor Schweigger ( born October 28, 1830 in Halle ( Saale), † August 24, 1905 in Berlin) was a German ophthalmologist.

Life

The son of the scientist Johann Salomo Christoph Schweigger studied medicine in Erlangen and Halle, where he also received his doctorate in 1852.

Schweigger habilitated in 1856 in Halle on auscultation and percussion, and was appointed Privatdozent. After a subsequent time as an assistant at Heinrich Müller in Würzburg, he continued his studies in ophthalmology Albrecht von Graefe in Berlin. After six successful years of research at Graefe Schweigger 1864 appointed extraordinary professor. He then went on study trips to Utrecht, London and New York City.

1867 Schweigger returned back to Berlin and practiced in the city. In 1868, he followed the call of the Georg -August- University of Göttingen as a directing physician of the University Eye Clinic. In 1871, he was the successor of Albrecht von Graefe at the Department of the sick eyes of the Berlin Charité.

Two years later, in 1873, Schweigger was appointed full professor in Berlin. In the same year he opened his own house in St. Mary's Road 23, a university clinic and 1875 own private clinic, which existed until 1900.

1881, the new University Eye Clinic was opened in the brick road as an independent Department. Schweigger her director. In 1899 he resigned from his teaching down because of a muscular dystrophy. He died of this ailment at the age of 75 years. His successor was Julius Michel.

Of significance Schweiggers microscopic studies on the pathology of the eye.
