Karl-Heinz Schönfelder

Karl -Heinz Schoenfelder ( born April 26, 1923 in Eibenstock / Erzgebirge ) is a German American studies and literary scholars. He is considered the founder of American Studies at the University of Leipzig.

Biography

1941 finishing school with Abitur at the Gymnasium Stollberg. Immediately thereafter drafted in, participation in the African campaign. 1943-46 captivity in the United States. 1946-49 Study of English Studies, Slavic and Romance languages ​​at the Pedagogical Faculty of Arts and the Karl-Marx- University of Leipzig. 1950 PhD, then a research assistant at the German Department of the University of Leipzig. From 1953 professor of American language and literature. 1954 Habilitation. 1956 appointment as professor at the Friedrich -Schiller- University Jena, besides visiting professor at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig until 1963. 1959-64 Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. From 1956 up to the higher education reform in 1969 Director of the English -American Institute, then to 1988, Head of the Science Area English / American Studies at the Department of Art and Literature at the Friedrich -Schiller- University Jena. 1971-74 Dean of the Social Sciences Faculty. 1988 retirement.

Besides the University of publication activity of 70 novels of American writers of the 19./20.Jh. in several East German publishers (structure, Reclam, folk and world), including works by Ernest Hemingway and a complete edition of Mark Twain.
