Karl Maximovich

Karl Johann Maximowicz, Carl Maximowicz or Karl Ivanovich Maximowitsch (born 11 Novemberjul / November 23 1827greg in Tula, .. .. † 4 Februarjul / February 16 1891greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a German - Russian botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Maxim. ".

Maximowicz was born in Tula as a German - Balt. He studied botany in 1845-1849 University of Dorpat. In 1850 he was Direktorialgehilfe the Botanical Gardens in St. Petersburg. In 1852 he became curator of the herbarium. In 1864 he became the first curator of the Botanic Garden, 1869 Director.

Travels

In 1852 he undertook with Alexander von Bunge, Girgensohn Schmidt and a botanical journey through Livonia. Then he accompanied Ruprecht on a botanical journey through Ingria.

From 1853 to 1857 he accompanied Leopold of Schrenck on a research trip to the Amur region and to Sakhalin in East Asia.

From 1859 to 1864 he traveled to China, Korea and Japan. Here he came first from Irkutsk coming to the Amur before and studied these and its tributaries Sungari and Ussuri. In 1860 he crossed the Sikhote -Alin Mountains Forest and embarked on to Korea, where he studied until September 1860. Then he went to Japan and explored until 1864 the local flora.

From his research trips, he returned with rich plant collections. The evaluation of specimens collected Maximowicz spent many years; for a variety of plant species he gave the first description.
