Karl Moriz Diesing

Karl Moriz Diesing ( born June 16, 1800 Krakow, † January 10, 1867 in Vienna, other spellings: Karl Moritz, Carl Moritz, Polish Karol Maurycy Diesing ) was a Helminthologe and botanist. He is regarded as his most important Helminthologe time in succession by Karl Asmund Rudolphi. His botanical author abbreviation is " Diesing ".

Biography

Diesing was born in Krakow, the son of an assessor in the noble court. He attended high school in Lviv and graduated from in 1819. From 1819 he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and parallel to the natural sciences. On December 28, 1826 he was awarded a doctorate in medicine, but he never took a job as a practicing physician. He was an assistant at the Institute of Botany under Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin. Since 1829 he was an intern at the imperial court and Natural Resources Cabinet, first he worked in the Department of Mineralogy, headed by Friedrich Mohs, then under Johann Gottfried brakeman in the helminthological department of the Zoological Cabinet. In May 1835, he was curator of the Department of Mineralogy, in July 1836 he was curator of the Department of Zoology. In 1848, his eyesight deteriorated greatly by retinitis until he was completely blind in 1849. Thanks to his excellent memory, he published with the support of his assistant Augustus of Pelzeln continue scientific work. In 1852 he retired. He died on January 10, 1867 of lung disease.

Since 1835, he was a member of the Leopoldina, since 1848 he was a regular member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna. He was also an honorary member of the Imperial Royal Society of Physicians in Vienna.

Scientific achievements

In the years 1850 and 1851 he published two volumes of the monograph Systema Helminthum in which he described 175 species of nematodes. In botany, he distinguished himself as a describer of algae.

To him, the genus Diesingiella Guiart in 1931 and the type Lingutula diesingii are named after him in honor.
