Karviná District

The Okres Karviná ( German district Karwin ) was a territorial entity in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. The Okresy were roughly comparable to the districts in Germany, the district administrations were dissolved on 31 December 2002.

The geographically very small district 356 sq. km is located in the northeast of Moravia and includes the industrial area to the east of Olsa Ostrava ( Ostrava ). In Okres Karviná approximately 276 700 people living in 17 municipalities ( Obec ), of which 7 cities.

Since 1776 lived the largest part of the district, especially from the coal to the 19th and 20th centuries was come Koksbetriebe, steel production and chemical industry. In the second half of the 20th century high level of financial resources were fed into the development of heavy industry, the demand for labor led to high immigration. It created new cities and settlements. In the 90s it came to the decommissioning and closure of large enterprises of heavy industry. However, mechanical engineering, electrical and leather industry could not compensate for the vacant capacities. The designation of new industrial centers and the establishment of new commercial structures and service providers were not able to shed jobs. Unemployment is among the highest in the Czech Republic.

In the region there are 36,000 companies, of which the industry still has the highest weight. The average gross salary heard despite the high unemployment still among the 15 highest in the Czech Republic.
