Katakwi District

Katakwi is a district in eastern Uganda with 307 032 inhabitants. Capital is the same Katakwi. In the south has Katakwi share Bisina and Opeta Lake.

The district was spun off in 1997 from Soroti, having already existed for some time in the 1970s and 1980s as North Teso District. It is divided into three counties Kapelebyong, Amuria and Usuk, which in turn are divided into 14 sub-districts and one municipality. These are divided into 80 municipalities.

The main agricultural production goods are peanuts, sorghum and cassava. Katakwi was hit in September 2007 by a large flash flood which affected particularly the regions around the cities Amuria and Katakwi. In the media it was a catastrophic event that affected the whole of northern Uganda. Katakwi was incorporated into the Sahel region, although it is actually located in the east-central Uganda. The rain measurements of weather stations from other districts since 1973 show that at least once per decade can be expected with a cast of 200 mm or more, which for a tropical country like Uganda should actually be a bit of normality.

Traffic

Katakwi has 581 km of paved roads and 20 km of rail line north of the Uganda Railway.
