Katerina Batzeli

Katerina Batzeli (Greek Κατερίνα Μπατζελή, even Ekaterina Batzeli ( Αικατερίνη Μπατζελή ), born May 25, 1958 in Athens ) is a Greek politician (PASOK ). She was from 7 October 2009 to September 7, 2010 Minister of Agricultural Development and Food.

Political career

After studying economics at the University of Athens ( 1976-81 ) and the University of Brussels ( 1982-83 ) worked Batzeli to 1989 as a staff member in the Socialist Group in the European Parliament. 1989-1993 she was a member of the Cabinet of Vasso Papandreou, who was EC Commissioner for Social Affairs at that time.

In 1994 Batzeli into national politics and became General Secretary for European and International Affairs at the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. They also took over party offices in the Greek socialist party PASOK.

From 1996 to 2004 she worked for the European farmers' union COPA, whose group she headed olive oil.

In the European elections 2004, she was elected to the European Parliament and was there from 2004 to 2007 spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. Then they took over the chairmanship of the Committee on Culture and Education and belonged to the Committee on Agriculture as well as the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs since then only as a deputy member.

In the parliamentary elections in Greece in 2009 Batzeli was elected to the Greek Parliament. Prime Minister George Papandreou called them on 7 October 2009 as Agriculture Minister in his government. In the cabinet reshuffle on September 7, 2010, she resigned from the government.
