Katharine Jefferts Schori

Katharine Jefferts Schori ( born March 26, 1954 in Pensacola, Florida, United States) is the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States and Bishop of the Diocese of Nevada. She is the first woman to serve as primate in the Anglican Communion.

After growing up in New Jersey Jefferts Schori studied biology at Stanford University, where she obtained the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1974. Later she received from the Oregon State University a Master of Science (1977 ) and a Ph.D. (1983 ) in oceanography. In 1994 she received a M.Div. and was ordained as priests. Her first job as a priestess was in the Good Samaritan - community in Corvallis (Oregon ), where she contributed as an Assistant Rector has a special responsibility for the Hispanic share of the community.

In 2001 she was elected to the office of the Bishop of Nevada and dedicated. As a result of this event, she received, as it corresponds to the tradition of bishops, the title of Doctor of Theology ( honoris causa ) of the seminary in which they had studied ( The Church Divinity School of the Pacific ).

Election as Presiding Bishop and Primate

The Episcopal Church met in General Convention in Columbus ( Ohio) in June 2006. Jefferts Schori was elected there on 18 June 2006 as the Presiding Bishop from a list of seven candidates by the House of Bishops on the fifth ballot. She received 95 of 188 votes cast. On the same day confirmed the House of Deputies, composed of priests, deacons, and lay people, the election of the House of Bishops. Jefferts Schori is the 26th person who holds the office of the Presiding Bishop, and the first woman to serve as Primate of the Anglican Church.

Katharine Schori since 1979 with Richard Schori, a retired professor of mathematics in Oregon, married. They have a grown daughter who serves as a captain in the U.S. Army.
