Kathedrale Maria Schutz und St. Andreas

The Church Maria Schutz and St. Andrew in Munich's Giesing sub is the Cathedral of the Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainians of the Byzantine Catholic Rite in Germany and Scandinavia.

History

The church was built according to the plans of the architect Erwin Schleich. It was consecrated on 17 October 1976.

The patronage refers to the legend of the apparition of Andrej Jurodiwi, feast day is Intercession ( Church Slavonic Покровъ Pokrova, 1./14 October. Greg. / Jul. ).

The exterior

The church is an ashlar with a floor area of about 18m in width and 24m length. The wide façade is divided in the middle by the entrance gate and about other arranged glass windows. Next to that are round bronze reliefs of the founder of Christianity in Ukraine, left of the entrance of St. Vladimir ( Volodymyr Ukr ), the right of the holy Olga.

The back of the church consists of three equal-sized, semi-circular apses, symbolizing the Trinity. In the middle of the flat roof rises a dome, topped by a cross.

The interior

From the entrance on the west side is accessed by an anteroom into the main room. The altar room is opposite the main room slightly elevated and separated by the iconostasis of this.
