Katok Monastery

The Kathog tradition ( Tib.: ka thog ) is a sub- school of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the oldest traditions of the same. The Kathog Monastery is located in the district of Baiyue ( Pelyül ) Autonomous Prefecture Garzê of Tibetans in Sichuan. It is next to Pelyül, Dzogchen, Shechen, Mindrölling and Dorje Drag the so-called "Six large sitting" of the Nyingma and is also due to its age and significance considered as the starting point of all the great Nyingma traditions in Tibet.

Kathog strain Monastery

The head monastery Kathog Dorjeden (Tib.: ka rdo rje thog gdan ) was in 1159 by Kadampa Desheg (Tib.: ka dam pa bde gshegs; 1122-1192 ) founded. It should be next to the Samye Monastery is one of the oldest surviving Tibetan monasteries. In the period following the establishment of the great Dzogchen master Vairocana visited the monastery Kathog during his stay in Gyarong. Near the monastery he built a stupa. Already the fifth throne holder of Kathog was built over a hundred monasteries and spread the tradition.

The Kathog Monastery is famous for its five-story temple, which is the "glorious copper-colored palace " Padmasambhava, the actual author of the Nyingma tradition.

Teaching

The tantric transmissions of Kathog monastery include teachings of the three "inner" tantras ( Maha Yoga, Anuyoga and Atiyoga ), but also Coe and phowa teachings are transmitted. Later, the spiritual richness of the tradition through the terma practices of Ratna Lingpa was extended.

Throne Holder and Masters from the Kathog tradition

Currently Lhoga Rinpoche 's 84th throne holder of Kathog. Of the 300 emerged from the Kathog strain monastery cloisters, a large part has been destroyed after the uprising of 1959 and during the Cultural Revolution, but 130 monasteries in China, Bhutan, India, Sikkim and Mongolia still exist today.
