Kaunas Reservoir

The Kaunas Sea ( Lithuanian: Kauno marios ) is an artificial lake, which was created by damming the Neman near Kaunas. The reservoir has existed since 1959. The Rückstauung comprises a length of over 80 km, the length of the actual reservoir, where the entire river valley is flooded, is 25 km. He has - at normal water level - an area of 63 km ². The greatest width is about 3 km, the maximum depth 22 m.

From the flood at least 45 villages were affected, whose inhabitants were resettled. Some buildings, such as the wooden church of Rumšiškės were saved and built up again elsewhere.

On the bank of Kaunas Sea is home to the monastery Pažaislis, the Ethnographic Open Air Museum Rumšiškės. The sea is used as a sailing waters in the immediate vicinity of Kaunas is a marina.

The reservoir serves as the lower reservoir for the pumped storage power plant Kruonis.
