Kawasaki KAT-1

The Kawasaki KAT -1 was the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki Heavy Industries, a trainer aircraft for the Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces.

History and construction

The KAT- 1 was developed on the basis of a tender of the Japanese air self-defense forces for a new beginner training aircraft. However, they lost the competition against those presented by Fuji Heavy Industries under license of the Beechcraft T -34. The machine has many common components with the Kawasaki KAL- 2, both the construction as well as in the common components. The main difference between the two models is in the accommodation of the passengers. While the KAL -2 can accommodate up to five people in two rows in a wide cabin, only two seats are installed in tandem in the KAT -1.

The KAT -1 is a cantilever low-wing monoplane. Your wings are constructed from two metal rails, clad with aluminum and feature a trapezoidal plan. The sides and elevator are both statically and aerodynamically balanced and carry trim tabs. The CAT -1 was equipped with a 240 hp ( 179 kW) Lycoming GO -435 six-cylinder piston engine and drove at an adjustable two-blade propeller. Students and teachers were housed in tandem seats in a closed all-glass cockpit. The KAT -1 has a retractable tricycle landing gear with shock absorbers pneumatic and hydraulic brakes.
