Kawthaung

Division

Kawthaung (also Kawthoung ) ( Burmese: ကော့ သောင်း မြို့, Thai: เกาะ สอง ) is the southernmost mainland city in Myanmar. It is located in the Tanintharyi Division. During the British rule in Burma 1824-1948 it was known as Victoria Point. This place is a free trade zone and is often visited by tourists with small boats by the Thai town Ranong from. Tourists use the border crossing often, as in Mae Sai and Mae Sot for a visa extension.

Kawthaung was the hardest hit among the cities in Myanmar by the tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004.

Kawthaung lies on the northwestern shore of the estuary of the Kraburi while situated on the opposite bank of Ranong.
