Kayes
Region
Kayes is a town in western Mali with 148 053 inhabitants ( census 2012) and the capital of Kayes region.
It is situated on the Senegal River and was from 1882 for a few years the capital of the colony of French Sudan.
The city is located at the beginning of the 20th century opened railway line Dakar - Niger. In addition, Kayes is accessible from Bamako around 500 km away by plane.
Kayes was for some years as a partner city of Magdeburg. The Magdeburg Mayor Werner Herzig had been made an honorary citizen of Kayes.
