Kazan Governorate

The government Kazan (Russian Казанская губерния / Kazanskaya Gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire, on the middle Volga. It bordered ( clockwise from north ) to the province of Vyatka, Ufa, Samara, Simbirsk, and Nizhny Novgorod. By today's terms, it included about the current Russian Republics of Tatarstan, Chuvashia and Mari El.

It was founded in 1708 by Peter the Great as one of the original eight provinces and first encompassed the entire middle and lower Volga region. Already in 1713 it was divided by the establishment of the government Astrachen, in the course of the 18th century territories were separated several times. It existed until 1920, when within the Soviet Union, the predecessor of today's republics ( Tatar ASSR Chuvash ASSR ASSR and Mari ) were founded.

Statistics

The government had 1897 2.170.665 inhabitants. Of these, 832 475 Russians, 675 419 Tatars, Chuvash 502 042, 122 717 Cheremises, 22 187 and 9679 Mordvins Votiaks.

The agriculture and horticulture was the main occupation of the population. The harvest was in 1902: 30,200 tons of wheat, 597,000 tons of rye, 346 300 tonnes of oats, 35,900 tonnes of barley and 129 200 tonnes of potatoes. In addition, flax and hemp were grown in greater quantities. The live stock was approximately 506,000 horses, 443,500 head of cattle, 1.0565 million ordinary and 4000 sheep with fine wool. The fishing was productive and of importance was also the forestry, which provided not least shipbuilding timber. At factories and industrial establishments were 159 with 8787 workers and about 16 million rubles production value. It was operated in particular grain milling, distillery, distillation, tallow, stearic acid, soap and leather manufacturing.
