Kazimierz Nowak

Kazimierz Nowak ( born January 11, 1897 in Stry, † October 13, 1937 in Poznań) was a Polish globetrotter, photographer and correspondent. After the First World War he lived in Poznań.

From 1931 to 1936, he wandered alone through Africa from north to south on foot or by bicycle, a total he put it back about 40,000 km. He wrote letters and made many photos in which he described in detail the African culture and mentality, religion and nature revealed. After his return, he has given numerous lectures on Africa.

About the trip two books were thanks to his daughter Elżbieta Nowak - Gliszewska and Łukasz Wierzbicki published: Przez Czarny Ląd ( By the black land ) and Rowerem i pieszo przez Czarny Ląd ( By bike and on foot through the Black Country ).

The second book was also recommended by Ryszard Kapuściński as a classic Polish reportage.

Plaque

On 25 November 2006, unveiled a plaque commemorating Kazimierz Nowak by Ryszard Kapuscinski on the main railway station in Poznań. The plaque shows Kazimierz Nowak's route through Africa.
