Kazimierz Wiłkomirski

Kazimierz Wilkomirski ( born September 1, 1900 in Moscow, † March 7, 1995 in Warsaw) was a Polish cellist, conductor, composer and music teacher.

Life

Wilkomirski studied at the Moscow Conservatory cello with Alfred von Glehn and took private lessons in composition with Bolesław Jaworski. From 1919 to 1923 he attended the Warsaw Conservatory, the composition class of novel Statkowski and studied conducting with Emil Młynarski. In addition, he was from 1919 to 1921 cellist in the orchestra of the Warsaw Opera.

In 1924 he became principal cellist of the Philharmonic Orchestra Lodz, 1925-1929, he taught at the conservatory of the city. Between 1926 and 1934 he was principal cellist and conductor of the Warsaw Philharmonic. A fellow of the Cultural Foundation 1932-35 he took classes with Hermann Scherchen. From 1934 until the beginning of World War II he was Director of the Conservatory of Gdańsk.

After the war he became rector and professor of conducting at the State Academy of Music in Łódź. Between 1947 and 1952 he served as director of the State Opera and Philharmonic in Wroclaw, also from 1950 to 1952 as Dean of the College of Music of the city. He then returned to Gdansk and was director of the State Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra and professor at the Music Academy of the city. From 1957 he lived in Wrocław, where he worked from 1961 as artistic director and conductor at the State Opera and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1963 until his retirement he taught chamber music at the University of Music in Warsaw.
