Kedarnath

D1

Kedarnath (Hindi: केदारनाथ ) is a town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage destinations.

Kedarnath is named after the legendary King Kedar, the so-called Golden Age, the Satya Yuga, to have lived. The place is located in 3584 m altitude in the Himalayas and the last few kilometers are only accessible via a helicopter service or a 14 km- long ascending footpath. In Kedarnath is an important Shiva shrine of Kedarnath Temple, which is one of the four monasteries of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage. Above Kedarnath is a sacred lake for Hindus, the Gandhi Sarovar, in which the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were scattered. Behind the temple there is the supposed grave of one of the greatest Hindu saint and philosopher Shankara.
