Keelung River

At the headwaters of the Keelung River

The Keelung River or Jilong River (基隆河Chinese, Pinyin Jilong Hé, W.-G. Chi-lung Ho ) is a 96 km long, right or eastern tributary of the Tamsui in northern Taiwan, Republic of China. It flows through the cities of Taipei and New Taipei City and the independent city of Keelung (基隆市, Jilong Shì ), whose name it bears.

Course

The Keelung River originates in the southern part of the well 10 km east of Taipei located in New Taipei City community Pingxi. He turns first to the northeast, and is accompanied by the Pingxi Line, a branch line of the Taiwan Railway. At the upper reaches of the river is the Shifen waterfall. In the community Ruifang the Keelung River comes within 2 km of the northeast coast of Taiwan in the East China Sea, before it changes its flow direction to the west.

Then it flows through the southern facing away from the sea districts of the port city of Keelung. Later in the southwest through the city Xizhi to Taipei the valley of the Keelung River is a major transportation corridor, through two main motorways and the main line of the Taiwan Railway. In the city of Taipei, the river reaches the Taipei Basin. It flows through the capital of Taiwan north of the center from east to west. The last section of the river forms the border between the municipalities Shilin and Beitou. When Guandu District in the northwest of Taipei's Keelung River empties into the Danshui, in turn, about 9 km north-west flows into the Formosastraße.
