Keith Gardner

Keith Alvin Saint Hope Gardner ( born September 6, 1929 † 25, 2012 in Livingston, New Jersey) was a Jamaican athlete who came mainly as a sprinter and hurdler, and to a lesser extent than long jumpers in appearance. In the Summer Olympics 1960, he went to the West Indies Federation, who belonged to Jamaica at the time.

Career

First international successes celebrated Gardner at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1954 in Mexico City. With the Jamaican team, he won both the 4 x 100 - meter relay and in the 4 x 400 - meter relay. In addition, he won the silver medal in the 110- meter hurdles and a bronze medal in the long jump. In the same year he secured at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver the title in the 120 - yards hurdles. In addition, he finished in sixth place with each of the 4-by- 110- yard relay and the 4 x 440- yard relay team and was ninth in the long jump.

At the Pan American Games in 1955 in Mexico City Gardner won silver medals in the 110- meter hurdles race and the 4 x 400 - meter relay. Less successful was he, however, at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. About 100 meters hurdles he already retired from the lead. The Jamaican 4 x 400 - meter relay team, with whom he reached the final, was later disqualified because his teammate George Kerr had the German runner Walter Supreme Disabled foul on the second round.

In the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1958 in Cardiff Gardner managed to defend the title in the 120 - yards hurdles. He also won the gold medal in the 100 - yard run, the silver medal in the 220 - yard run and the bronze medal with the 4-by- 440- yard relay team. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, he participated as a starter for the West Indies Federation. In the 4 x 400 - meter relay team, he won the bronze medal together with Malcolm Spence, James Wedderburn and George Kerr. It was next to another bronze medal in the 800 Kerr -meter run, the only Olympic medal for the West Indies Federation, which was in 1962 dissolved. In the 110- meter hurdles Gardner finished fifth.
