Kemal Reis

Kemal Reis ( also: Kemal Re'is ) (* 1451 in Gallipoli, Turkey, † 1511) was a Turkish pirate, Admiral (Ottoman Empire) and cartographer. He was the uncle of Piri Reis.

Life

He captured in 1501 in the war against the Republic of Venice at the Battle of Valencia, a chart of the western region which was drawn by Columbus. Several authors assume that the card came into the possession of Kemal Reis by a captured sailor. This dispute is only the question whether the statement of the captive seaman, that Columbus was the cartographer is right.
