Kennedytunnel

The Kennedy tunnel is a combined railway, highway and bicycle tunnel in the south of the Belgian city of Antwerp. The tube for the railway traffic is about 1,200 meters long, the tubes for the highway about 700 meters. He runs underneath the Scheldt. The tunnel is part of the Antwerp ring road R1, which was built but not completely finished until today. He was handed over to the road on May 31, 1969. The directly below running the same railway tunnel was opened on 1 February 1970. It was built for the railway line from Antwerp to Ghent.

The tunnel consists of two tubes, which each accommodate three lanes. The tubes have a width of 14.25 meters. On the outer sides each have a four -meter-wide tube for bicycle traffic passes. The railway tunnel is located about 10 meters below the road tunnel and has a width of 10.50 meters. The maximum speed is 90 km / h, limited to 70 km / h for freight trains from the direction of Ghent, which operate in the braking position G.
