Kerry Emanuel

Kerry Emanuel (* April 21, 1955 ) is an American professor of meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (Massachusetts ).

Emanuel is a specialist in atmospheric convection and the mechanisms of reinforcement of hurricanes. He coined in 1994 the term " Hyperkan ". In 2007 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Time Magazine declared him in 2006 among the 100 most influential people.

2013 called for Emanuel in an open letter together with colleagues Ken Caldeira, James E. Hansen, and Tom Wigley, a " return to nuclear power " because the resistance against nuclear power plants polluting the fight against climate change. The scientists appealed to world leaders and environmental organizations to work for the development of safe nuclear power plants. "There is no realistic way to stabilize the climate, which does not require a substantial share of nuclear energy ," the researchers wrote in their letter.
