The Kerschenez (Russian Керженец ) is a 290 km long left tributary of the Volga River in the European part of Russia.
Course
The Kerschenez rises in the north-west of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, near the border with the Kostroma Oblast. From there it flows mainly in a southerly direction through the densely wooded, sparsely populated landscape. About 20 km north- west of Lyskowo the river finally flows into the pent-up reservoir for Tscheboksarsker Volga.
The average Kerschenez is from November to April, frozen. The ice in the spring lasts about two days, the subsequent spring flood, which supplies about 63 % of the annual runoff, lasts until May.
History
The sparsely populated catchment area of Kerschenez served after the schism within the Russian Orthodox Church the so-called Old Believers as a retreat. Until the 19th century there were numerous of their Kerschenskije Skity (Russian Керженские скиты ) mentioned settlements.
Tourism
In addition to the settlements of Old Believers the Makarios - Scholtowodski - Trinity Monastery is a popular tourist destination near the mouth of the river. Because of its remoteness and its charming location in a wooded valley, the river is also popular with hikers boat.
