Keuka Lake

The Keuka Lake is an atypical representative of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York because of its Y shape. Because of its shape, the lake in the past Crooked Lake was named. The present name Keuka ( kju ː kə ) comes from the languages of the Iroquois and means canoe landing, in the language of Seneca Lake also with an elbow.

The lake was created as a moraine at the end of the last ice age. The Keuka Lake is drained by the Keuka Lake Outlet, which leaves the lake at its northeastern end in Penn Yan and another lake flows to the Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake. The outlet of the lake was later extended to a channel, the Crooked Lake Canal, which connected the two lakes.

The Keuka Lake is 218 m and is 32 km long. Its width varies between one and three kilometers. The length of the shoreline is 96 km. The surface of the lake is 47 km ², the maximum depth of 57 m, the average depth of 31 m.

In the lake there are the following food fish: American lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, landlocked form of the Atlantic salmon, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and American perch. The high fish stock is supported by a variety of bait fish, Alosa pseudoharengus in particular.

Penn Yann is located at the northeastern end of the lake, Branchport and Hammondsport at the northwest end at the south end. Hammondsport was the residence of Glenn Curtiss, a pioneer of naval aviation, and now houses the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum.

The Keuka College is located in Keuka Park on the west bank of the eastern Seearms. The Keuka Lake State Park is located on the eastern shore of Nordwestarms. The YMCA Camp Cory is located on the eastern shore of the Nordostarms. Camp Good Days and Special Times is located on the western shore of Nordwestarms.

An important economic factor in the region is the growing of grapes and wine.

The Keuka Lake Association ( KLA ) monitors the water quality of the lake and its catchment area. The spread of zebra mussels originating from Europe in North American waters also affects the Keuka Lake.
