Description

Appearance and leaves

Khaya species grow as trees. The alternate and spirally arranged on the branches leaves are stalked. The leaf blades are pinnate. The bare leaflets have a smooth edge.

Inflorescences and flowers

In lateral or nearly terminal, thyrsigen inflorescences many flowers are borne. Khaya species are monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). The flowers look like hermaphrodite but functionally unisexual.

The flowers are radial symmetry and four or fünfzählig double perianth. The four or five sepals are fused only at their base. The four or five petals are free and rotated. The eight or ten stamens are fused to one another jug, kettle or cups. The discus is cushion -shaped. Four or five carpels are fused to a constant upper, four - or fünfkammerigen ovary. Each ovary chamber usually contains 12 to 16 (rarely up to 18 ) Amphitrope ovules. The scar is disc-shaped with four or five grooves on the upper end.

Fruit and seeds

The more or less spherical seed capsules are woody at maturity and open with four or five doors. The all around membranous winged seeds contain sparse endosperm and an embryo with two flat cotyledons ( cotyledons ) and lateral Radicula.

Use

The wood ( trade names other Khaya Mahogany, Grand Bassam, N'Dola, N'Gollon, Undianunu, Zaminguila ) has a density of 720-750 kg/m3. It is used among other things for countertops, veneers, hardwood floors, musical instruments, and boat-building.
