Kid Sheik

Kid Sheik or Sheik Cola Kid (actually George Colar, born September 15, 1908 in New Orleans, † November 7, 1996 in Detroit ) was an American jazz trumpeter, pianist and vocalist of the New Orleans Jazz.

Life

In his youth he took some lessons in New Orleans at Wooden Joe Nicholas and had a short time in 1925 his own band. He played the next 16 years in the Storyville District. Colar studied 1943-45 at the U.S. Air Force School of Music, had his own band briefly and then worked with George Lewis at Club Manny 's Tavern 1949. Colar was in the 1950s a member of the Eureka Brass Band and Harold Dejan's Olympia Brass Band. In the 1960s he worked with his own bands, The Swing Roosters and the Storyville Ramblers. In 1963 he went to England with Barry Martyn's band on tour. From the late 1960s he worked with Captain John Handy, made with him in Europe and New York, 1966/68 recordings. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed with the Preservation Hall Jazz on tape.

Kid Sheik was in the postwar period to the protagonists of the Dixieland jazz movement. In his later years he was with the pianist Sadie Goodson.verheiratet. He stepped up in the 1980s in the brass bands in his home town, like the Olympia Brass Band.
