Expansion plans

The expansion plans at the beginning of this century, mainly included the extension of the take - off and landing runway from 1300 to 2100 m in order to allow jet aircraft landing in Kiel. The B had 503 tunneled the new railway. In March 2002, the expansion was approved by the government of Schleswig -Holstein. Proponents of the expansion relied on the fact that the airport was very important for the region and that only as regional and business aviation is secure. It was also claimed that the expansion is economically and ecologically harmless.

The opponents of the expansion kept the realization of such a project to be unnecessary to achieve the desired results, the intra- German long-distance transport could also be implemented well with the existing connection to the ICE network. It makes sense as the expansion is mainly the connection of approximately 75 km ( straight line ) away Hamburg Airport to the railway and a link from there to Kiel. It has also been called into question that the airport, which should be limited to regular services, after the costly expansion is viable. They feared that an intensive introduction to the charter flights would be needed to operate the airport profitably. The protest was also supported by the municipality of Old wood that would have been affected by Holtenau itself most from the increased aircraft noise.

After the end of 2005, the last flight line had been discontinued, the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Economy oyster man decided on 24 January 2006 that the plans were " placed permanently on file ."
