Kielder Water

Largest storage capacity of all reservoirs in the UK. With 6 MW most powerful hydroelectric power plant in England.

The Kielder Water is a reservoir in Northumberland, England. The North Tyne flows through the reservoir. The reservoir is surrounded by Kielder Forest the largest - but artificial - Forest of England.

The dam was built in 1975-1981 and should give priority to the water supply of North East England serve. Queen Elizabeth II opened the dam in 1982. The dam is operated by Northumbrian Water. As part of Northumbrian Water Drought plan, the reservoir can also fill the River Derwent below the Derwent Reservoir.

A weir separates the Bakethin reservoir in the north of Kielder Water in the south. With 200 million liters Kielder Water is the largest in terms of volume lake in the UK.

RWE has taken 2004, the power generation with the help of water over turbines in the dam from 2005 to 2025 and operates with a capacity of just over 6 MW, the most powerful hydroelectric power plant in England.

The Kielder Water Sailing Club operates sailing on the reservoir and the lake and its surroundings are a popular recreation area.
