Kiev Governorate

The government Kiev (Russian Киевская губерния / Kievskaya Gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire, on the territory of modern Ukraine. It belonged to General Kiev and bordered to the following provinces (from north clockwise): Minsk, Chernigov, Poltava, Kherson, Podolia, Volhynia.

It included 50999.5 km ², capital was Kiev.

The province is one of the eight original founded by Peter the Great governorates. It was enough in the first phase in the far eastern Ukraine and southern Russia, while the more western territories belonged at that time to Poland - Lithuania. 1781 reduced and converted into a governorship, got it after the Third Partition of Poland in 1796 its later form by getting division areas and it was confined to the west bank of the Dnieper. Resolved it was in the wake of territorial reforms after the establishment of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic of 1919.

Statistics

In the 1897 census, the province had 3,559,229 inhabitants. Of these, 2,819,145 Little Russians ( Ukrainians ), 430 489 Jews, 209 427 Russians, 68 791 and 14 707 German Poland. There were also smaller groups of Belarusians, Tatars and Czechs.

The harvest yielded 1902 759.000 tons of wheat, 747,000 tons of rye, 403,000 tonnes of oats, 185,000 tons of millet, 148 000 tonnes of barley and 82,000 tons of buckwheat. Addition, however, hemp and flax, vegetables, fruits, tobacco, and especially sugar beets were grown. In this agriculture, the province Kiev was a leader in all of Russia. 1902 were harvested 2.27 billion kg beets. The livestock was handsome; there were 1902 612.160 head of cattle, 911,000 sheep with fine wool grobwollige and 6000, 425 400 pigs and 21,700 goats. Horse breeding in 1901 operated in 88 stud farms, which provided good riding horses especially. Throughout the province, there were 420 600 horses. The industry has been vigorously developed. In 1895 there were 654 commercial establishments with more than 40,000 workers and a production value of 80 million rubles. Accounted for them to the sugar industry, by far the most important branch of industry than half. Addition, there were numerous mills, distilleries and tobacco factories in the city of Kiev and machine factories. The most important export products of the government were grain and sugar.
