Killala

Killala (Irish Cill Ala) is a town in Ireland. It is located in the northeast of County Mayo in the province of Connacht, around 10 kilometers north of Ballina on the west shore of Killala Bay and has 569 inhabitants (as of 2006). Killala is a bishopric.

History

The foundation of the town goes back to an early monastic settlement. From this time the round tower has been preserved. In 1798, a French landing party landed under General Humbert with 1,000 soldiers in the port of Killcumin, north of Killala. This landing was to support the rebellion of the United Irishmen. The village itself was, as Ballina, occupied in the wake of the French. The memory of the invasion of the French is still kept alive. So remember plaques in Killcumin, Killala and Ballina to the incident.
